QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—an evidence-based suicide prevention gatekeeper training model. Much like CPR provides laypeople with the skills to save someone experiencing cardiac arrest, QPR teaches individuals how to recognize the warning signs of a mental health crisis and intervene effectively to save a life.
Question: Recognize warning signs and directly ask the individual about suicidal thoughts.
Persuade: Listen without judgment, offer hope, and persuade the person to accept help.
Refer: Connect the individual to appropriate local resources, crisis lines, or professional support services.
