Diabetes can be controlled and the progression of complications delayed with an individual treatment program that includes diet, exercise, and/or medication.
Diabetes classes offered at Decatur County Memorial Hospital are designed to teach the person with diabetes and his/her family more about the disease and how to implement lifestyle changes to avoid complications. A Registered Dietitian and Pharmacist teach sessions each quarter that follow curriculum standards of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP).
Class Topics Include:
Overview of diabetes
Healthy eating with a focus on: Meal planning, portion control, food and nutrient groups, restaurant eating, carbohydrate counting, and much more!
Role of exercise in treatment
Medications available to treat diabetes
Blood glucose testing and monitoring
Ways to reduce risks for short and long term complications
Problem solving and goal setting
Each session consists of a series of three – two hour classes and registration is required to attend the classes. Classes are covered by most insurance companies. Please call your insurance company for coverage details.
